We would like to share something that is a big part of a surfer's life - yes, travel.
We want to shift the focus to sustainable travel.
What is sustainability? It is a broad concept that encompasses many different factors. But in short, it could be described as a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
At WAHINES, we want to help you get started and provide you with tips on how to choose sustainability in your surfing. We also welcome you to our female surf community where we invite you to exciting news, sustainable surf life, events, and trips.
Sustainability as a surfer
Traveling for a surfer is a part of the lifestyle. But like in other industries, our travel has had a significant climate impact. Therefore, both as travelers and surfers, we have the opportunity to choose our modes of transportation, accommodation, and how we interact with the local community at surf destinations.
Traveling is about considering the offerings that are marketed to us and making decisions about what it means for us, the local community, and the climate impact in terms of accommodation, transportation, and activities, so that future generations can also visit the surf spots in the future.
What should one consider regarding sustainability?

# 1: RESEARCH
When it comes to choosing trips, there are many options to choose from. Therefore, we recommend that you do thorough research. Consider whether the destination you are traveling to shows a clear focus on environmental and social aspects or if mass tourism has established itself in the area.
# 2: TRANSPORTATION
Getting to your destination may sometimes involve choosing a less environmentally friendly option. In such cases, you can ask for carbon offsetting or choose to pay for it at the checkout. Remember that we can't do everything, but choosing fewer layovers and asking companies about their contributions to sustainable development increases knowledge about your choices. Make a conscious decision based on your ultimate destination.
# 3: LOCAL
Sustainability at the local level means more than just participating in organized beach cleanups. It's about having a long-term commitment that can truly make a difference. Creating cooperation and collaboration is important. Take the time to consider how you, as an individual, can contribute on-site. Could it be by staying, eating, and shopping locally? Or could it be by getting involved in a local project that contributes to community development during a few hours of your surf trip?!
For us at WAHINES, sustainability includes all three aspects mentioned above - length, thickness, and width. These factors play an important role when buying a surfboard. Remember that the more volume a board has, the better it is for beginners.
